Horse Sport Ireland are now inviting applications for the 2022 Pony, Junior and Young Rider Show Jumping High Performance programmes. On December 11th 2017, the Children First Act 2015 commenced. This new law puts Children First: the National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children, on a statutory footing. The Act provides for a number of key child protection measures. Most notably for Horse Sport Ireland, following the commencement, the immediate requirements include; Adopting all provisions in relation to mandatory reporting of child abuse, Ensuring the appointment of child safeguarding officers which include; Designated Liaison Persons Children’s Officers National Organisation’s Mandated Person Horse Sport Ireland Mandated Person is Paul Hayes, National Safeguarding Officer Provide Child Safeguarding Training Programmes Horse Sport Ireland Safeguarding Training Policy, currently in place and viewable here. The Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) Level 2 Coach course dates for 2017 have been finalised. The initial three days of the course will take place from Monday 13th March to Wednesday 15th March 2017 at Spruce Lodge Training Facility, Redcross, Co. Wicklow. This course provides coaches with the necessary skills and technical knowledge to work as an independent equestrian coach up to elementary level dressage, 1.20m show jumping and CCI1* – 2* Eventing. This is an 8 day course in total. The HSI Level 2 Coach course is currently the first level in the HSI Coaching Programme whereby the successful candidates are certified as an independent equestrian coach. Safeguarding 3 – Designated Liaison Person Training Every club/organisation should designate a person to be responsible for dealing with any concerns about the protection of children. The Designated Liaison Person is responsible for reporting allegations or suspicions of child abuse to TUSLA Child and Family Agency or Social Services (NI) and/or An Garda Siochána / PSNI. It is recommended that this person is a senior club person. However, if there is difficulty identifying a separate individual to take this role, the Club Children’s Officer can be appointed as Designated Liaison Person once the club/organisation is clear about the responsibilities of each role.
