Sport Sub Board
HSI Sport Sub Board
The HSI Sport Sub Board was established in 2009 and held its inaugural meeting on 20th July that year. It meets on a quarterly basis at HSI and is independently chaired by John Malone, former Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
There are currently 25 Affiliate Organisations affiliated to Horse Sport Ireland and each one is allocated a seat on the Sport Sub Board, providing full representation to the broad spectrum of the Irish equestrian sector. See the current list of Affiliates.
The Sport Sub Board’s remit is to act as an advisory body on policy and strategy in the equestrian sport and leisure areas. The Sport Sub Board recommends how the Irish Sports Council’s annual sports grant funding is allocated towards activities and international hosting events. Annual metrics provided by Affiliates help make the best possible case for funding across the sector. The Sport Sub Board also considers applications for affiliation. All recommendations are put to the HSI Board for approval.
The meetings enhance communication between the sporting organisations where they can report on their events, achievements and issues affecting their sport. The meetings provide the opportunity to network and benefit from shared ideas, initiatives and cross-functional activities. Examples of initiatives include the annual HSI Equestrian Showcase Parade at Punchestown, National Anti-Doping Programme, cross-Affiliate Garda Vetting Policy, Child Protection courses, Introduction to Horse Riding for Schools Programme and Irish Horse TV.
