TEAGASC HORSEMANSHIP SKILLS COURSE

This course is being run by Teagasc in Maryville Equestrian Centre, Carrigaline, Co. Cork starting on Thursday 4th March and will run for 10 consecutive weeks.
 

Participants will be shown how to commence basic handling, how to show a horse in hand, lunge a horse on the flat and over a fence, and loose school a young horse. This is a hands-on course and it is essential that participants bring their own horse. The horse must be a minimum of three years of age and ideally not older than four, sound and in good health. No stallions are allowed.

The instructor for the course is Teagasc Equine Specialist Advisor, Mr Declan McArdle. It is a FETAC accredited course (level 5).

Equipment required for the course:

  • Hard hat (this should have a kitemark symbol and the code PAS015 or EN1384)
  • Gloves
  • Suitable footwear
  • Head collar
  • Lead rope
  • Grooming kit
  • Lunge line
  • Lunge whip
  • Schooling whip
  • Cavason
  • Bridle
  • Numnah
  • Roller
  • Side reins
  • Breast plate
  • Brushing boots

Places on this course are limited to ten, therefore early booking is essential. The cost of the 10 week course is €200. Day one is a full day and, from day two onwards, individuals will come for either a morning or afternoon session.
