CURRAN FINISHES IN TOP 20 AT BURGHLEY, IRISH-BRED HORSE TAKES TROPHY

(05 Sep 2010)

ARMY rider Capt. Geoff Curran finished in 17th place this afternoon (Sunday) at Burghley Horse Trials in Britain, after completing all three phases successfully with the Irish-bred gelding 'The Jump Jet', which is jointly owned by the Minister for Defence and Irish businessman Maurice Cassidy.

Curran, who is a reserve rider for Ireland's squad at the World Equestrian Games, was lying in 12th place overnight, but two fences down in the show jumping phase today dropped the Waterford-born rider to 17th overall.

Overnight leaders, New Zealand's Caroline Powell and the 17 year-old Irish-bred Sea Crest gelding 'Lenamore', walked away with the coveted Burghley trophy this afternoon, Powell's first time to win a CCI four-star event.

The only other Irish rider to complete the course at Burghley was Sarah Wardell on Killeenduff Boy, finishing in 46th place.

Burghley Horse Trials is one of just five four-star events to take place in the world.
