Ryan Best Of Irish Individuals At European Championships

(27 Sep 2009)

Finishing in 19th place after the show jumping phase on 'Fernhill Clover Mist', the Bandon, Co. Cork rider added 12 faults today to finish just outside the prize money.

Twenty-three year old Clonmel competitor Sam Watson and 'Horseware Bushman' were next best of the team combinations in 24th place, with Individual riders Ciaran Glynn in 25th place on 'Killossery Kruisita' and Michael Ryan, husband of Patricia, 27th on 'Old Road'.

Irish team riders Sacha Pemble and Liz Power were two of the 19 riders eliminated on Fontainebleau's punishing cross-country course on Saturday, which reduced Ireland to below the three-rider minimum needed to complete the championships as a team. Before Power's elimination, the Irish were in Team Bronze Medal position.

Horse Sport Ireland High Performance Manager Ginny Elliott said today: "Overall I'm disappointed, as there was a team medal for the taking. However we can take some positives. Trish Ryan performed very solidly and really led the team. She rode an outstanding 'team' round yesterday under real pressure.

"Sam Watson and Ciaran Glynn did extremely well on their championship debuts. They were two of the youngest riders here and this will stand to them. Michael Ryan and 'Old Road' were called in late but they did a great job and Michael was a very positive influence in the squad. Sacha Pemble and Liz Power had a tough time yesterday but they were both making their Senior Championship debuts and there was no shame in not getting through what was a really tough cross country course."

The Individual European Gold Medal went to Britain's Kristina Cook on 'Miner's Frolic', but an Irish horse 'Some Day Soon', bred by Wexford's Donald Murphy, took the Silver Individual medal, piloted by another British rider, Piggy French. Bronze went to Germany's Michael Jung and 'La Biosthetique - Sam FB'.

The Team Gold Medal was won by Great Britain, with Italy taking Silver and Belgium Bronze.
