In 2010, Horse Sport Ireland agreed to sponsor the purchase of an Irish Draught horse for the Garda Mounted Unit. A screening day and extensive search was held last year. Earlier this year a suitable horse was found and the newest recruit was required to undergo a six-week trial period at the Garda Mounted Unit in the Phoenix Park.
The 4 year old Irish Draught gelding that was selected for the Mounted Unit is by Rockrimmon Silver Diamond (ID C1) out of Clogheen Cavehill Pride (RID), by Cork Arthur (ID C1). He was bred by Patrick Egan from Athlone, County Roscommon.
Horse Sport Ireland and An Garda Síochána’s Mounted Unit would now like your help in naming their newest recruit! He is a 4 year old Irish Draught gelding who will start his new career with the Mounted Unit this year. All of the Mounted Unit horses’ names are derived from Irish mythological folklore and we would like your help in naming the newest arrival to the unit in Aras an Uachtaráin, where he will be stabled.
The person whose name is chosen will be invited to attend the official hand over of the horse from Horse Sport Ireland to the Mounted Unit, which will take place on Thursday 23rd June, and will also be presented with a Team Ireland Equestrian jacket and cap. So get your suggestions in – the winning name will be announced on Wednesday 15th June!!
The Garda Mounted Unit commenced operational duty in May 1998 and, being a national resource, has provided a regular operational policing support to Gardai in every county. The most important characteristic in a police horse is a good temperament. The Garda Mounted Unit concentrates exclusively on the use of the Irish Draught breed as it has been its experience that this breed has the qualities most desirable in a police horse.
To enter the competition, simply email your suggested name and the reason why you think it should be chosen to Laura Skelton in Horse Sport Ireland (Email: lskelton@horsesportireland.ie).
