IT WAS with great sadness that Horse Sport Ireland learned of the death of
Tattersalls Ireland Managing Director George Mernagh on Friday.
George had a very successful career as National Hunt Jockey and a
distinguished career with Tattersalls. His career as a jockey and with
Tattersalls brought him to prominence in the Thoroughbred world.
He also made an immense contribution to the Sport Horse sector.
He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Tattersalls
International Horse Trials which is now established as one of the leading
international events in the world.
Horse Sport Ireland Chairman Joe Walsh said that George Mernagh had made an
outstanding contribution to the horse sector in Ireland.
"George achieved so much in his all too short life. He was a man who made
things happen, while treating everyone with respect. He had huge credibility
and his integrity was beyond question. He was a gentleman to the core and
bore his illness with courage. He will be sorely missed by his many friends
in equestrian sport. Friday was a sad day for everyone involved in our
sport," he said.
Horse Sport Ireland has been informed that the offices of Tattersalls
Ireland will be closed on Monday July 25th as a mark of respect for George.
George will repose in Balrath on Sunday July 24th and will be removed to
Castledockrell Parish Church, Enniscorthy on Monday July 25th for a 2.00 pm
Mass with burial immediately afterwards.
May he rest in peace.
