THE success of the HSI / AIRE Introduction to Horse Riding Schools’ Pilot Programme during 2010 has resulted in the scheme being extended to February of 2011, it was announced today (Thursday).
The scheme was devised by the HSI Sports Sub Board as part of the Shared Affiliate Programme to provide an opportunity for both 5th and 6th class primary and secondary shool students to try horse-riding for the first time.
The pilot programme, run by Horse Sport Ireland in conjunction with AIRE (Association of Irish Riding Establishments), has been underway since the autumn of 2010, and is designed to give students the opportunity to experience horse riding in their local AIRE-approved riding establishment. For those who may never have seen a horse up close before, let alone ridden one, it has proven to be an unforgettable experience.
Twenty AIRE Riding Establishments were selected up for the programme, which now runs until February 2011, and approximately 60 local Educational Schools are participating. The feedback has been very positive and it is proving especially popular with Transition Year students.
A subsidised rate per lesson of €10 per child has been agreed with AIRE establishments who are participating in the scheme for the pilot programme, while HSI provides an €8 per student travel subsidy for each student participating. The one hour lesson includes demonstration riding by expert tutors, safety around ponies and horses, care of the horse and tack and the opportunity to try horse riding in a supervised environment.
Joe Walsh, Chairman of Horse Sport Ireland, said: “While we focus on Team Ireland Equestrian’s pursuit of medals in 2012, it’s important to remember where it all starts. Horse Sport Ireland is committed to supporting the development of the equestrian leisure industry and giving children the opportunity to try horse riding for the first time. I am delighted to announce that the scheme has now been extended for a further two months.”
Some students will discover a lifelong interest in horses which willl benefit all equestrian organisations as the students become more experienced and progress to Pony Clubs, the Irish Pony Society and then onto involvement in the specialist equestrian disciplines.
