Greg Broderick and MHS Going Global through to second round of Olympic Show Jumping competition

Tipperary’s Greg Broderick and The Irish Sport Horse MHS Going Global have qualified for the second round of the individual Show Jumping competition at the Olympic Games in Rio following today’s opening contest at Deodora Olympic Park.

Broderick and the 10-year-old gelding looked to be heading for a foot-perfect round and were clear coming to the last line of fences. The pair knocked the first and second part of the troublesome double just one fence from home to finish on eight faults. Brazilian course designer Guilherme Jorge set a stiff test for the Olympic Show Jumping opener, with the water fence and final double in particular causing plenty of problems.

The top 60 from today’s 75 starters now go forward to Tuesday’s second individual qualifier, after which the field will be reduced to the top 45 for Wednesday’s third round. The top 35 will then go forward to Friday’s individual medal deciding rounds where all will start on a zero score.

Ireland’s Judy Reynolds has already qualified for the Dressage individual final in Rio, which takes place on Monday afternoon. Reynolds will ride Vancouver K in the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music having finished among the top 18 following the qualifying rounds last week.
