Horse Sport Ireland Stallion Selections

The Horse Sport Ireland stallion selections are taking place at Cavan Equestrian on the 25th and 26th March 2015. This will be the sixth year the new stallion inspection system will operate as part of the HSI breeding policies for the Irish Sport Horse and Irish Draught Horse Studbooks. This year a total of 41 stallions will be presented for selection, including 25 sport horse stallions (including 3 with traditional breeding), 13 Irish Draught stallions, 2 pony stallions and 1 Thoroughbred stallion.

The selection will include a conformation, movement and athleticism assessment using linear profiling. Based on the recommendations of the Task Force for the Irish Draught Horse Breeding Policy Review the triangle assessment has being abolished, however this element remains for the Irish Sport Horse Studbook.

Director of Breeding and Programmes Alison Corbally said “with 41 stallions coming forward there are some very interesting performance damlines in some of the Irish sport horse stallions being presented. There are also interesting bloodlines in the Irish Draught stallions combining both showing results and performance lines. Added to this we have three traditional pedigrees and one thoroughbred”.

On Thursday afternoon, 26th March, Sport Horse stallions will be assessed jumping under saddle. Breeders in attendance will have the opportunity to hear comments from the chairman of the selection panel summarising the panel’s evaluation of each stallion. Stallions which meet the criteria will have an opportunity to parade them at the 15th annual National Stallion Parade at 7pm on Thursday 26th March. Spectators are most welcome and encouraged to attend the stallion selections. We particularly want to extend a warm welcome to our visitors from overseas.
