Cork’s Shane Sweetnam had the perfect preparation for Sunday’s Longines FEI Nations Cup at La Baule in France, scoring a fourth place finish in the five-star Longines Grand Prix at the French coastal venue today (Friday).

Riding the 12-year-old stallion Chaqui Z, Sweetnam was among seven who made it into the jump-off. Fourth to go against the clock, they looked to be heading for a clear round before the final fence fell as they crossed the line in 39.07 seconds. It proved to be the fastest of the four-fault scores in the second round to leave them in fourth overall collecting €15,000.

A delighted home crowd saw a French winner, with Patrice Delaveau taking the top prize of almost €50,000 with Aquila HDC when clear in 38.58. America’s Kent Farrington continued his comeback from a broken leg to finish second with Gazelle, while Belgium’s Gudrun Patteet took third place on the podium with Sea Coast Just The Music.

Sunday’s Longines FEI Nations Cup in La Baule will see Sweetnam joined on Rodrigo Pessoa’s Irish squad by Cameron Hanley, Paul O’Shea, Mark McAuley and Paul Kennedy.

The Irish Show Jumping team is sponsored by Devenish and The Underwriting Exchange.
