Ireland secures Paralympic equestrian place

Ireland has secured an individual place at the Paralympic Games in Rio, the place was secured as a result of Helen Kearney’s Olympic ranking following her good performances last season.

 

The Paralympic games will take place from September 7th to 18th. Horse Sport Ireland high performance Para equestrian selection committee will nominate an athlete to represent Ireland at the Paralympic Games based on published selection criteria. Athletes will be considered for selection based on their performances at designated competitions during 2016.
Horse Sport Ireland CEO, Damian McDonald said: “Helen Kearney did a great job to win a Paralympic place for Ireland. Helen is a great ambassador for Ireland and Paralympic Sport and while it is a pity we won’t have a team there it is great that we will have a rider at the Paralympic Games” he said.

“With our eventing team and individual places in Show Jumping and Dressage we will have at least 6 riders at the Olympics and 1 rider at the Paralympics. The 2016 Olympics and Paralympics will be something for equestrian enthusiasts to look forward to” he said.

Speaking about the news, Chef de Mission for Paralympics Ireland for Rio 2016, Denis Toomey stated: “We are delighted that a slot has been secured for Ireland in equestrian at this year’s Games in Rio. We wish all of the riders who are competing to fill that slot the best of luck. The Irish team announcement will take place on July 5th.”
