THE FIRST leg of Horse Sport Ireland’s Irish Sport Horse Studbook Show Jumping Series 2011 took place this weekend at the Horseware Louth County Show. With €10,000 in prize money on offer for these 5 year old and 6/7 year old classes, competition was fierce at the Dromiskin venue.

Forty-eight combinations started in Saturday’s 5 year old qualifier, with 61 horses entered for the 6/7 year old qualifier. The top 25 horses in each of Saturday’s qualifiers went through to Sunday’s finals. The 5 year old final saw 8 combinations producing clear rounds to make it through to the jump-off, which is not run against the clock. Seven combinations were to share the €4,500 prize fund, when they produce double clear rounds.

In the 6/7 year old final, six 6 year olds and six 7 year olds went through to the jump-off. Seventh into the ring, and first of the 7 year olds, Capt. David O’Brien and Ringwood Glen (ISH) produced a foot perfect round in the very fast time of 35.75. This time proved to be unbeatable, meaning the pair took top prize in the first 6/7 year final of the 2011 Series.
