19/06/11 TIPPERARY native, Greg Broderick, on board Dr Noel Cawley’s stallion, Castellar (ISH), stormed to victory in the 6/7 Year Old Final at Galway County Show. This weekend’s classes at Galway were the fifth leg in the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2011 and Broderick’s win today (Sunday) scored him his third victory in a 6/7 Year Old Final in this year’s Series. After taking the class at the second leg in Barnadown with another of Dr Cawley’s horses, Rincarina (ISH), the Thurles rider went on to win the 6/7 Year Old Final at Cavan with Golden Exchange (ISH), who was bred by Noel Cawley and is owned by his daughter Lisa Cawley.
In the 5 Year Old Final, eleven combinations made it through to the jump-off. Six managed to produce a second clear round to share joint first position and the €4,500 prize fund. Alongside Gabriel Slattery & Captain Caruso (ISH), Linda Courtney & LCC Silver Fox (ISH), Shane Goggins & Claddagh Cruise On (ISH), My Irish Diamond Clover (ID) & Trevor Gray and Jonathan Gordon & Orbas (ISH), Greg Broderick’s luck was to continue when he shared first place with the five other riders. His victorious horse in the 5 year old class was the mare, Winter Cruise (ISH). Again bred by Noel Cawley and owned by Lisa Cawley, this mare is a full sister to Castellar (ISH) who took top spot in the first class of the day
Speaking after the Finals, Noel and Lisa Cawley said they were thrilled with today’s results. The dam of both Greg Broderick’s winners, Irco Rain (ISH), has produced many top class showjumping horses, including the international showjumper Mullaghdrin Gold Rain (ISH) – formerly campaigned by Irish international Shane Breen and now ridden by British rider, Jessie Drea. Noel explained that showjumping was in the mare’s blood with pedigree tracing back to the late Iris Kellett’s famous mount, Morning Light.
