18/09/09 JESSICA Kurten became the first Irish rider in 13 years to win the prestigious Spanish Grand Prix when she took first place at Barcelona tonight (Friday).
With Lady Georgina Forbes's ever-improving nine year-old mare 'Castle Forbes Cosma', Antrim-born Kurten was one of just eleven riders through to the second round, and narrowly beat Cork's Billy Twomey, who took tonight's runner-up prize with Sue Davies's mare 'Tinka's Serenade'.
The pair have been dominating classes at the four-star show since Thursday, and have now accounted for three wins and two second places in 24 hours, Twomey claiming another runner-up spot earlier this evening in the Coca-Cola Trophy.
Kurten tonight won a car worth 30,000 euro for her Grand Prix victory, while Twomey pulled down prize money of 18,000 euro.
The last Irish rider to win the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona was the late Paul Darragh, with 'Cera', in 1969.
