BREEN TRIUMPHS IN BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

(02 May 2010)

TIPPERARY'S Shane Breen added the Grand Prix title to Ireland's triumphant weekend at the four-star show in Lummen in Belgium when he romped home this afternoon (Sunday) with a classy double clear round on Carmel Ryan's grey stallion 'Carmena Z'.

The 35 year-old British-based rider was one of 12 through to the second round from a starting field of 46, and one of just three competitors to have a zero score in both rounds.

Breen finished just under two seconds clear of Belgian challenger Maurice van Roosbroeck, and collected 10,100 euro for his victory.

Ireland's Billy Twomey finished in eighth on 'Tinka's Serenade', which he owns jointly with Sue Davies, on a total of four faults incurred in the first round.

On Friday Breen and Twomey were two members of the Irish team that won the Belgian Nations' Cup, beating 12 other countries to the trophy.

Last night (Saturday) Breen and the Irish-bred 'Dorada' were runners-up in the Flanders Derby, with Twomey in fourth on 'Cavinem'.
