Twomey Wins, Kurten Second In Spanish Feature Class

(17 Sep 2009)

Thirty-two year old Cork native Billy Twomey won the major feature class of the day, the Vanguardia Trophy, with Camilla Berger's grey gelding 'Montanus Colorado', while Antrim's Jessica Kurten claimed the runner-up spot on Lady Georgina's Forbes's 'Castle Forbes Cosma.'

Earlier, Twomey, riding Michael Connaughton's Irish-bred Cavalier Royale mare 'Cavinem', stopped the clock in the final round of the two-phase competition at 24.90 seconds. And, in an unusual tie, so did Britain's William Whitaker with the chestnut Carthago gelding 'Clark 12'.

With these two sharing the winner's prize money, it was left to Kurten to place Lady Forbes's mare 'Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois' in fifth with another clear final round, but just over a second slower than the joint leaders.
