EIGHTEEN year-old Wexford rider Bertram Allen saw off a strong challenge from British riders when he won this afternoon’s (Saturday) jump-off class at the Green Glens Arena in Co. Cork.
This was the teenager’s second victory at the three-star Millstreet international show this weekend.
On Friday afternoon, riding Ballywalter Farms’s Molly Malone V, Allen collected 8,500 euro for a win in the Grand Prix Qualifier, while today he outpaced three top British riders in the jump-off, collecting a further 8,500 euro, this time aboard Billy Twomey’s stallion Romanov.
Allen, who earned six European medals at Pony and Junior levels before his 18th birthday earlier this month, has been a notable performer in the senior ranks, with several international Grands Prix wins already behind him.
Earlier, Derry’s Daniel Coyle kicked off the Millstreet show in fine fashion with a win in the first Grand Prix Qualifier of the weekend, riding Conor Coyle’s mare Athlet van’t Lozerhof, finishing with over a second in hand to the runner-up effort of Britain’s Holly Gillott and the Irish Sport Horse Dougie Douglas.
Millstreet’s Grand Prix, worth 50,000 euro in prize money, takes place on Sunday afternoon.
