WEXFORD’S Bertram Allen, who has just turned 19 this month, collected 40,000 euro for a spectacular second place in the Longines King George V Gold Cup competition at Hickstead, England this evening (Sunday).
Riding Billy Twomey’s stallion Romanov, the Irish teenager went clear all the way in the show’s major feature class, and was beaten by just over a second in the final round by US star Beezie Madden and Cortes “C”, who picked up the prestigious trophy and prize money of 66,000 euro for their first place. Madden was the first woman to win the class in its 108-year history.
Ireland also saw Tipperary’s Shane Breen finish fifth in the class with Golden Hawk, clear rounds giving him prize money of 12,000 euro.
On Saturday, Shane’s brother Trevor won the Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Hickstead on Adventure de Kannan.
Bertram Allen won the Hickstead Accumulator class earlier today with Wrangler II.
