WEXFORD’s Bertram Allen and the grey mare Molly Malone V produced a stunning performance at the five-star show in Hamburg, Germany today, winning the five-star 1m55 Mercedes-Benz Championat against a field of the world’s top riders.
Allen received a brand new Mercedes Benz after his spectacular win at the Global Champions Tour event, bringing to six the total number of cars the 20-year-old has now won in his illustrious career.
Speaking afterwards, Allen said: I am thrilled with my win on Molly, she was brilliant over a big testing track and she is in top form. I knew it was going to be a really fast jump-off, so I said I’d go as fast as I felt comfortable with and today it was just fast enough.”
Forty-seven riders went to post with 13 clear rounds returning to jump-off against the clock. Allen and Molly Malone came out on top with the fastest double clear round of 39.38 seconds, pushing Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa into second aboard Citizenguard Cadjanine Z, while Germany’s Christian Ahlmann finished third with Epleaser van’t Heike.
The win qualifies Bertram Allen for the Hamburg Grand Prix on Saturday, where he will be hoping for another good result as the Olympic selection deadline for Rio 2016 looms ever closer.
Elsewhere, Offaly’s Darragh Kenny claimed victory in the three-star Rabobank Prix at Eindhoven in The Netherlands with Catuso – owned by Blue Gate Farm. Kenny crossed the line in a time of 39.75 to claim the top prize.
