IRELAND’s Shane Breen grabbed a battling third place in this morning’s (Saturday) opening 1m45 class against the clock at the five-star Nations’ Cup meeting in Mannheim, Germany.

Riding Reconnaissance, Breen was last to go of the 37 starters and was chasing Italian leader Giulia Marquet Martinengo’s clear round time of 58.64. The Irish pairing left everything intact but were just over half a second shy of the target, and slotted into third overall. Second place went to Germany’s Felix HaBmann on Cayenne WZ.

Breen will open Ireland’s challenge in this afternoon’s Nations’ Cup of Germany when he will partner Golden Hawk. Ireland is second in the starting order and the team also features Kevin Babington with Shorapur, Shane Sweetnam on Chaqui Z and Conor Swail riding Grand Cru vd Vijf Eiken.
