CAMERON Hanley came within half a second of taking home a 50,500 euro cheque from the five star show in Gijon Spain tonight (Monday) when he finished as runner-up in the Grand Prix.

The Mayo-born rider, piloting his own bay gelding Antello Z, nevertheless collected 30,600 euro for a spirited second place finish behind the winning combination of Netherlands rider Henk Van de Pol and the 12 year-old gelding Willink.

Hanley, who also took part in Ireland’s acclaimed joint second place finish in Saturday’s Nations’ Cup, delivered another double clear round tonight, one of only five to do so from an international starting field of 44 riders.

Cork’s Billy Twomey and Sue Davies’s 18 year-old mare Tinka’s Serenade made it into sixth place in the Grand Prix tonight, collecting four faults in the jump-off.
