Sunday 16th of July is the first qualifier for the HSI Sport Horse Foal Championship, as part of Newcastle West Show, Co. Limerick at approximately 1.30pm in Ring 1.

The Sport Horse Foal Championship aims to identify, evaluate and reward breeders who have bred a foal that has the potential to be competitive at the highest International level in the disciplines of Show Jumping or eventing.

Foals competing must be registered in a studbook that is a member of the WBFSH or Weatherbys and be shown with their dams. All foals must be a minimum of 6 weeks old and named in order to compete at the final. Foals were judged under the criteria of functional conformation, walk, trot, canter, overall athleticism and balance as well as pedigree which is provided to the judges. Performance damline pedigree will be assessed by the studbook prior to the class. Points for pedigree will be based on the ISH Star Rating system, for 3 generations on the dam line.

Foals are only permitted to enter one regional qualifier but will not be limited to competing in the region in which the owner resides. €3,000 in prize money is on offer at each of the qualifiers where 4 foals will be selected for the final; the best show jumping type colt and filly, and the best eventing type colt and filly. €500 is awarded to each first place foal and €250 to the reserve. In addition, €1,000 will be awarded to the best traditionally-bred foal and €1,000 towards prizes in kind, sashes etc.
