![]() amme The Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) Level 1 Apprentice Coach course is a four-day course providing candidates with the skills and techniques to work as a coach to novice level. It is recommended that HSI Level 1 Apprentice Coaches work under the guidance and supervision of a higher qualified coach. course and provides candidates with the skills necessary to work competently as an independent coach up to elementary level. Candidates must attend all course contact time and achieve the required standard at an o cial assessment in dressage, showjumping and cross-country. Two people achieved the required standard in the HSI Level 2 Coach course in 2015: Amy Fitzgerald and Mary Ellen Rice. course began. Twenty-five coaches attended the initial course days, which took place at Cavan Equestrian Centre and at the National Sports Campus, Abbotstown. the capacities to train performance riders to compete at the highest level in regional and national competitions (up to 1.45m showjumping, Prix St George dressage and 3-star eventing). The HSI Level 3 Coach course is discipline-specific are some core elements which will be similar in all three fields. However, some coaches did choose to specialise in more than one discipline. Six dressage candidates, 14 showjumping candidates and eight eventing candidates attended each day, which was a liated by top-class equestrian coaches, tutors and professionals. Candidates travelled from all over Ireland, as well as from Istanbul and America, to take part. Heike Holstein delivered the dressage practical sessions, Comdt John Ledingham and Denis Flannelly delivered the showjumping sessions and Yogi Breisner delivered the eventing sessions. Day two at the National Sports Campus was delivered by Liam Moggan of Coaching Ireland, who delivered a very insightful session on the role of the coach, improving coach communication skills, coaching delivery styles and refining the structure of the coaching session. Day three began with Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) veterinary delegate, John Killingbeck, discussing veterinary care of the competition horse. He was joined by rider physiotherapist, Andy Thomas, to discuss physical fitness and asymmetry of the rider. This made for a very interactive day with practical and theory sessions throughout, concentrating on both horse and rider. and will continue throughout 2016, with the first batch of final assessments expected to take place before the end of next year.
