GALWAY’S Michael Duffy took his third win at the Global Champions Tour show in Hamburg, Germany today (Friday), with a decisive victory in the second of the Derby Qualifiers.
The 19 year-old, who was riding Dermot Forde’s Irish Sport Horse mare Westland Ruby, trounced German challenger Philipp Makowei and the ten year-old Afp S Chantal by a substantial 9.48 seconds in the 62-strong class, and added a further 6,000 euro to his haul of prize money.
Duffy and Westland Ruby also won the opening class at Hamburg on Wednesday and the first German Derby Qualifier on Thursday.
The Derby final takes place on Sunday, while the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Duffy’s was not the only Irish victory at Hamburg on Friday – Billy Twomey won the 1m50 Two Phase competition riding Katrina Moore’s nine year-old black stallion Royale de Rouet.
The Cork-born rider, who is now based in England, collected 6,000 euro for his win, which saw him narrowly outpace his nearest challenger, Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez and Darlon van Groenhove, by just under a second.
A total of 45 combinations took part in the five-star class.
