The 2023 series follows a successful series in 2022 which was open to all DAFM-approved studbooks. In 2023 this criterion remains but incorporates all horses documented as Irish-bred in any studbook passport. Foreign-bred mares and stallions are eligible to compete following classification in a DAFM-approved studbook. For all terms conditions and eligibilities, please CLICK HERE.

Brendan Murphy and Shirsheen Calensky won the six-year-old HSI Studbook Series last year

The Studbook Series represents an opportune production series for young horses targeted toward a career in show jumping and participation for Irish studbooks in the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) Young Horse Jumping Championships at Lanaken. This success has directed many of the changes to course format for 2023, for example the introduction of a schooling, and later, competition open water fence. The Galway qualifier/final class is a one-day event to facilitate other events within the SJI calendar.

In this series riders, breeders and owners will be rewarded for the breeding and production decisions through several class and league-based prizes. There will be a total prize fund of €95,000 for the series, an increase on the 2022 fund. Breeders’ prizes will be awarded for leading performance in each class and overall league results. A new prize for 2023 includes recognition and support for leading young riders in the form of league prizes. Funded under National Breeding Service

1 Galway will be a one-day Qualifier/final class to facilitate the SJI calendar 5 &6 Y/O one round (Article 238.1.1).
7Y/O: two-phase class with the second round against the clock (Article 274/ 5.3).

Dates and venues confirmed for 2021 Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series

The dates, venues and criteria for the 2020 Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series have been announced, with many of Ireland’s top riders excited at the chance to once again compete at the highest level with their top young horses. The series, for five, six and seven-year-old Irish Sport Horses, is now in its 17th year in existence and for 2021, there will be €80,000 in prize money on offer from the Irish Sport Horse Studbook.

The Irish Sport Horse Studbook Series has been key to the development and preparation of Irish horses for the future and in particular for the World Championships for young horses, held each year in Lanaken, Belgium. In 2019, a stunning performance saw Irish horses and riders claim four of the nine World Championship medals on offer at the Championships.

Alison Corbally, HSI Director of Breeding and Programmes said:

“It’s a great boost for the breeders and producers to have a calendar of events from late April through the summer months. Events such as this are extremely important to keep young horse production in Ireland moving forwards. We wish all breeders, owners and riders the best of luck for this year’s competitions and look forward to seeing you all again.”

Waterford’s Gemma Phelan, who won the 2020 ISH Studbook Series final with MHS Sunday Girl (ISH) owned and bred by John and Michael Brennan, said:

“I thoroughly enjoy jumping our young horses year after year in the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Series. It is Irelands best way to produce young horses steadily in a safe and careful environment. These classes offer great experience to the young horses as they get to jump over two days in the best venues around Ireland with the best course designers. These classes prepare them for the bigger classes ahead’

Fermanagh’s Catherine Thornton won the 6-year-old ISH SJ Series in 2020 riding Coachella (ISH). Coachella (ISH) is by Ustinov out of Icing by Cruising (ISH)(TIH) bred by Tom & Linda Magee and owned by Catherine Thornton and David Campbell.

Catherine said “The ISH Studbook series has given me a great opportunities and a platform to show my horses over the years. When Coachella (ISH) won in 2020 it added an extra sense of achievement as she had been produced through the Studbook series as a five-year-old. She was always consistently in the placings and I am excited by her future potential. The addition of breeders prizes last year were certainly appreciated and it is excellent to see breeders such as Tom and Linda Magee getting the recognition they deserve. I will continue to produce her through the ISH SJ Series this year and aim for the same successes in the 7-year-old classes.’

Each leg of the Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series will take place under strict Covid-19 protocols and will run behind closed doors unless there is a change to Government restrictions over the coming months.

Riders and owners should ensure they familiarise themselves with the criteria. Particular attention should be paid to information on entries for these classes.

Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series 2015 – Dates & criteria announced

Horse Sport Ireland have announced the dates and venues for the 2015 Irish Sport Horse Studbook Showjumping Series. The Series which is made up of classes for 5, 6 and 7 year old horses celebrates its tenth year in existence in 2015. Over the decade, the Series has gone from strength to strength with entry numbers building year on year.

The Series is now open to all Irish Sport Horses and last year the total number of entries for the Series across the eight legs was 1,156. Results at international level are testament to the success of the Series, with graduates having gone on to achieve medal successes at the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Jumping Championships in Lanaken.

Speaking on the Series, Irish showjumper and winner of both the 5 Year Old Final and League in 2014, Ger O’Neill said; “Ard Ginger Pop (ISH) and Arraghbeg Clover (ISH) are proof of the success of the Series. Both have brought home medals from the World Championships after coming through these classes. The standard of jumping in the classes is improving every year and we are seeing horses being produced to a much higher level.”

Arising out of recommendations in the new industry strategic plan, ‘Reaching New Heights’, a meeting was held between HSI, Showjumping Ireland and the RDS with a view to having a better spacing of young horse class dates. As a result, the final leg of the Series will take place later this year, on 23rd August in The Meadows Equestrian Centre in Lurgan Co. Armagh.

For 2015, there will be €80,000 on offer in prize money from Horse Sport Ireland for the young horse series. Full criteria for this year’s Series are now available by clicking on the link below. Riders and owners should ensure they familiarise themselves with the criteria, as there have been several changes since last year. Dates and venues for 2015 are detailed below.
