Traditional Irish-bred horses fill podium in 5-year-old division at Rosanna

Steven Smith claims a second victory in the 6-year-old class and Traditional Irish-bred horses shine in the 5-year-olds

Taking place in Rosanna, Ashford, Co Wicklow, the second leg of the Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) Eventing Studbook Series saw new combinations add their name to the league table and the dominance of traditionally bred Irish horses in the 5-year-old class.

Northern Irish rider Steven Smith recorded his second victory in the 6-year-old division. Smith now holds first and second place in the overall series. Riding CLO Kann Surprise (ISH), who was the runner-up in the opening leg of the series at Clonmahon House. Smith jumped double clear to finish on his dressage score of 23.0.

Also finishing on his dressage score and claiming second place was Patrick Whelan and MBF Silver Bridge (ISH), on a score of 27.5. Completing the podium was Ian Cassells and Greenogue GiGi (ISH). Whelan is currently sitting in third and fourth place in the 6-year-old league.

In the 7-year-old class Patrick Whelan and Paul Donovan’s Dermish Chill (ISH) led from start to finish, ahead of Alyssa O’Neill and her own Danos Lola (ISH) in second place.

Caitie Slater had a one-two in the 5-year-old class, leading from the dressage phase onwards. Slater won on board Richard Ames’ Belline Imperial Diamond (ISH)[TIH] and finished second with JFH Golden Spear (ISH)[TIH], following a fifth-place finish in the opening leg. Completing the podium was Georgina Pettit and BCL Belletastic (ISH)[TIH].

Slater is currently tied at the top of the 5-year-old leader board with Adam Haugh and Chrome (ISH), winners at Clonmahon House.

The third leg of the HSI Eventing Studbook Series will take place in Ballindenisk, Co Cork on Sunday 16th of July.
