  • 7 June 2016, 17:06

Following the success of last year’s inaugural HSI Sport Horse Foal Championship, Showjumping Mare Championship and Eventing Mare Championship, Horse Sport Ireland is pleased to announce the details of the 2016 Championships.

HSI Sport Horse Foal Championship 2016

The HSI Foal Championship has a very generous prize fund of €25,000 and will aim to identify, evaluate and reward breeders who have bred a foal that has the potential to be competitive at the highest international level in the disciplines of showjumping or eventing.

This year there will be 5 regional qualifiers held between July and September with separate sections for potential showjumping foals and potential eventing foals.   Foals will be permitted to enter one regional qualifier but will not be confined to entering the qualifier in their own region.  €3,000 in prize money will be on offer at each of the qualifiers where 4 foals will be selected for the Final; the best show jumping type colt and filly, and the best eventing type colt and filly.

The final will take place at the end of September or early October where a pot of €10,000 will be on offer and two Champions will be named, Champion Showjumping Foal and Champion Eventing Foal.  There will also be a special prize for the overall best traditionally-bred foal.

Commenting on the 2016 Foal Championship, Alison Corbally, HSI Director of Breeding and Programmes, “There is a significant prize fund on offer for the 2016 HSI Foal Championship as we are committed to supporting breeders who endeavour to produce top class performance and breeding stock.   Last year’s Championship was well supported and we hope that this initiative will grow and evolve to become one of the most prestigious events in each breeder’s calendar.  I would like to encourage anyone who is considering entering their foal in the 2016 Championship to register their foal as soon as possible to ensure that they are eligible to compete”.

HSI are now seeking applications from existing shows and venues interested in hosting a regional qualifier and/or final.  The closing date for applications is Monday 13th June 2016.   For further information on this application process please download the following documents:
