Combination land Mullingar leg to consolidate top spot in table

The fourth leg of the 2023 Horse Sport Ireland Studbook Series, supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food, and the Marine took place at Mullingar CSI2* on June 1st and 2nd at the Co. Westmeath venue.

In the 7-year-old class, a total of 25 horses made it through to the final with Co. Wexford’s Tomás Doyle and the ever-consistent mare Monbeg Ruby (ISH) taking the victory.

Having claimed points at every leg of the league thus far, Doyle and the grey mare by Diamant de Semilly (SF) now sit comfortably on top of the leadboard with 27 points ahead of second placed Gerard Clarke and Castleforbes Gillian (ISH) on 19.

Clarke and the Kannan (KWPN)-sired daughter of Jessica Kurten’s Dublin Grand Prix-winning mare Castleforbes Libertina (WESTF) took victory in the opening leg in Galway Equestrian Centre and put in a gallant effort to take second place in the Mullingar leg, stopping the clock in a time of 35.88 compared to Doyle’s winning time of 35.47.

Molly Hughes-Bravo once again completed the podium line up, as she did in the third leg at Cavan Equestrian Centre when finishing in third place with HHS Tokyo, jumping double clear with a time of 36.12 in the five-way jump off.

Fourth and fifth places went to Emma O’Dwyer with Carrickview Emerald K (ISH), and Jack Brennan with MHS Everything (ISH) respectively, each of whom registered their first points on the leaderboard this season.

In the 6-year-old division, a total of nine horses jumped first round clears in Friday’s final. Of those that returned to jump the second round, three horse and rider combinations; Clarke with Drishoge Creed (ISH), Kevin Gallagher with BP Casablanca (ISH), and Mikey Pender with Madgeslane Diva (ISH) made it two for two finishing on clear scorecards.

Shane O’Reilly and BWE Special Rose (ISH), one of the nine first round clears, sit atop the leaderboard on a total of 19 points, with Clarke and the homebred Drishoge Creed (ISH) breeding down their neck in second place with a total of 17 points.

A very competitive 5-year-old class saw 17 horses jumping double clear in the final to divide the prizefund, with Linda Moloney and Sir Escobar (ISH) once again adding to their points tally to bolster their position on top of the league.

Tholm Keane and the ever consistent mare Nairobi (KWPN) see themselves sharing second place on the leaderboard with Brendan Murphy and OKE Dixieland Rock (ISH) who’s double clear performance in Mullingar saw them storm into that tied for second position.

With just three points separating Moloney and her second-place challengers, it’s all to play for as the HSI Studbook Series prepares to move to Cork Summer Show on June 17th and 18th.
