Greg Broderick and MHS Going Global narrowly miss out on place in Olympic Show Jumping third round

Ireland’s Greg Broderick and The Irish Sport Horse MHS Going Global, have missed out on a place in the third round of the individual Show Jumping competition in Rio, despite not knocking a fence in today’s second qualifier.
Despite the disadvantage of been drawn very early as third to go of the 69 starters, Broderick and the 10-year-old gelding didn’t touch a pole in today’s competition. However an agonizing toe on the tape at the water, along with one time penalty, saw them finish with five faults to add to eight faults from Monday’s opening round.
Broderick and Going Global finished in 50th place overall on a 13 fault total, less than one fence short of making it into the top 45 who go forward to tomorrows third round.
Speaking afterwards, Horse Sport Ireland Show Jumping team manager Robert Splaine said:
“You just couldn’t be disappointed with Greg or the horse because they jumped fantastically well on both days. Just one fence less either on the first day or at the water today which caused a lot of problems, would have been enough but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.
Robert Splaine added, “You would be disappointed if they were jumping poorly and looked to be struggling but it was the opposite, they were well within themselves and jumping superbly. I am expecting the next competition to be even tougher and that is the extremely disappointing part as I feel that would have suited our combination even more. I would like say a special word of thanks to the horse’s owners for giving us such a wonderful horse to represent us and I would also like to thank all the people at home in Ireland for their huge support.”
The top 45 combinations now go forward to Wednesday’s third round before the field is narrowed down to 35 for the medal deciding final competition on Friday.
