Quality excels in the west from HSI Loose Jumping Championships
- 14 October 2020, 20:09
This week marks the start of the Horse Sport Irelands 3 and 4-year-old filly loose jumping championships. There was €1,500 on offer for the Pony loose jumping championship in Creagh. There is €6,000 on offer at each of the three venues for the 3 and 4 year old filly championships in Tubberbride Equestrian, Cavan Equestrian and Warrington Top Flight Equestrian centre.
On Monday 12th October over 20 ponies turned out in Creagh Equestrian to compete in the 2020 loose jumping championships. These fillies were judged by Philip Scott and Tiernan Gill.
Following the competition Philip said ‘I was highly impressed with the turn out of the ponies here today, they were extremely well turned out and it is refreshing to see the quality and standard of pony become higher year after year. We saw ponies today with excellent conformation, movement and ability. I have no doubt that these ponies will be produced to the highest standard and will be capable of reaching the highest levels in either eventing, Showjumping or working hunter classes. I am excited to see so many pony breeders supporting HSI’s breeding initiatives and I look forward to what the future holds for Irish ponies on the world stage’.

17 fillies competed in Tuesdays loose jumping championship in Tubberbride Equestrian. This competition was judged by Tiernan Gill and Gabriel Tunney.
Following the competition Gabriel said ‘The facilities offered by the Kerins family were second to none and they did everything possible in keeping with the Covid 19 restrictions which allowed this championship to take place. It was great to see some of the 4-year-old fillies develop from last year. The pedigrees coming out this year are up there with the best in Europe, and the Irish breeders are using more and more 5 star stallions with our performance Irish mares which can only strengthen our brood mare herd for the future’
Tiernan Gill concluded with ‘The mares were an excellent type this year. It is fantastic to see the tremendous effort that breeders are putting in in order to meet the requirements for breeding and producing mares. There are 3 mares back this year competing in the 4 year old class that were out loose jumping as three year olds. It is great to see that they are being produced and kept by their owners with breeding in mind. The mares were all well presented and I am confident that they have sufficient ability to be produced and be successful in their disciplines. Over the last three years I feel that Irish breeders are making more informed breeding decisions due to the guidance of HSI’s breeding policies and supports. We are now just as good, if not better than our European counter parts’.
