The 2023 Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) Eventing Studbook Series kicked off on Saturday, 10th of June, at the inaugural one-day event in Clonmahon House, Summerhill, Co Meath.

In the 7-year-old division it was Sara Glynn and Granny Jean’s Unicorn (ISH) who took the honours ahead of dressage leaders Patrick Whelan and Dermish Chill (ISH). Owned by Sara Glynn and rider Laura Glynn Granny Jean’s Unicorn is by Jack of Diamonds (SWB) and out of Killossery Ringwood (ISH).

The 6-year-old class attracted high entries and proved highly competitive with only three combinations completing on their dressage score. It was a one-two for Steven Smith who won the class with Strangford (ISH) on a score of 31.3 and was second with CJO Kann Surprise (ISH) on 31.8. Fellow Northern Irish rider Joseph Murphy completed the podium with Dstud Flirtation (ISH).

Adding 3.2 time penalties cross country and one show jump down to finish in fourth place was Wexford native Patrick Whelan and Power Eire (ISH). Completing the top five was Niamh Tottenham and her own homebred gelding Slieve Callan Gael (ISH).

Adam Haugh won the 5-year-old class with his own Chrome (ISH) on a score of 28. Unlike the 6-year-old division, the majority of combinations finished on their dressage score. Unfortunately, the only combination to be eliminated cross country were the dressage leaders Caitie Slater and Belline Ames to Please (ISH). Slater did finish fifth with JFH Golden Spear (ISH)[TIH).

Elaine O’Connor claimed second place with Tullymurry Grace (ISH). This is the fourth top three placing for this mare since she began her eventing career last summer. Lucy McIlroy was third with Imperial Warrior (ISH) and Tottenham, riding Slieve Callan Solice (ISH) were fourth. Slieve Callan Solice is a full-brother to Slieve Callan Gael who placed in the 6-year-old class.

McIlroy also picked up league points as the only Young Rider to score points across all three age divisions.

The second leg of the HSI Eventing Studbook Series will take place in Rosanna, Co Wicklow on Saturday 17th of June, entries close at 5pm on Tuesday 13th of June.
