Can 19 Year Old Bertram Allen become Ireland’s first Show Jumping World Cup Champion?
- 15 April 2015, 21:58
Wexford’s Bertram Allen is Ireland’s representative at this week’s Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Final in Las Vegas, USA.
Allen has qualified following a string of impressive results across Europe including winning two qualifying legs on two different horses. For the final Bertram will ride his 11 year old grey mare Molly Malone. Allen will be one of 41 of the world’s top riders competing at what is essentially the World indoor Show Jumping Championships.
Irish Show Jumping legends Eddie Macken, Jessica Kurten and Trevor Coyle with the great Cruising have all finished second in the World Cup Final but no Irish rider has won the event.
Allen is now ranked tenth in the world, and is one of the favourites to win the overall title.
The winner will be decided on points accumulated over three competitions run on Thursday (Friday morning GMT 03.00), Friday (Saturday morning GMT 03.00) and Sunday (GMT 20.00). The identity of the World Cup Champion will be known at approximately GMT 9.30 on Sunday night.
Horse Sport Ireland Chairman Prof. Pat Wall said the entire Irish equestrian community would be behind Bertram.
“The opening events are on in the middle of the night in Ireland but that won’t deter equestrian fans who will be following the action in Las Vegas. Hopefully Bertram and Molly can do something special but it is already a great achievement to qualify for the final at such a young age. Senior Team Manager Robert Splaine will be on hand at the event and we send our best wishes to Bertram” he said.
