HSI Foal Championship Final 2018
- 22 October 2018, 16:48
The Sport Horse and Sport Pony Foal Championship aims to identify, evaluate and reward breeders who have bred a foal that has the potential to be competitive at the highest level in the disciplines of Show Jumping or Eventing. Foals were judged under the criteria of functional conformation, walk, trot, canter and overall athleticism and balance. Horses were also given points for pedigree.
This year saw 5 well-contested regional qualifiers where 8 foals were selected at each qualifier for the final; the best show jumping type colt, colt pony, filly and filly pony, and the best eventing type colt, colt pony, filly and filly pony. The qualifying venues were Newcastle West Show, Creagh Equestrian Centre, Wexford Equestrian, Tubberbride Stables and Coilog Equestrian Centre.
The final took place on Friday, 19th October at the 4 day Senior, Junior, YR & COH Grand Prix Show at Cavan Equestrian Centre where a pot of €13,000 was on offer for the eight Champions, Champion Show jumping colt and filly and Champion Eventing colt and filly. There was also a special prize for the overall best traditionally-bred foal which was won by Annabelles Dream (ISH)[TIH] the Eventing Filly by Loughahoe Guy (ISH)[TIH] out of Vanity Fare (ISH)[TIH] bred and owned by Michael Dooner.
Norman Allen and Tiernan Gill judged the Show Jumping foals while Nicky Roncoroni and Maurice Coleman judged the Eventing foals.
Norman Allen said “ The two winners in the show jumping section were exceptional. The filly in particular has an excellent pedigree. Her dam Rincarina was a prolific winner at 1.60m and her sire For Pleasure is producing top class foals. I see no reason why this filly wouldn’t go to the highest levels of competition with the scope, movement and attitude she showed. The colt foal had big loose movement with plenty of scope. He could also be a top level competition horse in the future. I believe that this Championship is a great initiative from HSI and gives spectators the opportunity to see some of the best foals in the country”.
