Brendan Murphy is in pole position for five and six-year-old glory in the HSI Studbook Series at the halfway point of this year’s competition.

The Wexfordman sits on top of both league tables after three rounds of the series, with ABS MISTY (ISH) having gone double clear in all three legs of the five-year-old competition and Shirsheen Calensky (ISH) doing the same in the six-year-old class.

Murphy is joined at the top of the five-year-old standings by Tholm Keane and Krafty Krackers (ISH) and Harry Wood with ESI Indigo (ISH), with all three jumping double clear in each event to date to receive 21 points.

In the seven-year-old class Derek McConnell has impressed with Barnadown winner Inlaws Manolo (ISH) and the pair lie clear on their own at the top of the table with 17 points after the third leg at Cavan Equestrian Centre.

Inlaws Manolo is entered at Mullingar this week and McConnell is hopeful of a trip to Lanaken again this year after the gelding competed at the at the World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in Belgium in 2021.

Following his Barnadown win, McConnell said: “He was very good last year in the Studbook Series and in the Development Series last year and was lucky enough to be selected for Lanaken,” McConnell added.

“He was a bit green when he went there, however, and put the first fence down in the first qualifier – that was it, our chances were gone.

“I felt he was a little lacking in experience when he went there, even though he was deserving of his spot. This year I feel he is more of a proper horse.”

McConnell is closely followed by Meadows winner Mikey Pender and HHS Cornetta (ISH) on 16 points, with Pender also lying in a share of third place with HHS Calgary (ISH) on 10 points.

Also on 10 points are Alan O’Regan and Seaview Demonstration (ISH) after their success at Cavan, with Cork’s O’Regan eyeing a return tilt at Lanaken later in the year.
