Unique Clarecastle show returns after two years

  • 4 August 2022, 18:22

It is one of the most unique shows in the country but this Sunday the Clarecastle show returns after a two-year hiatus.

The show, sponsored and supported by Horse Sport Ireland, features the Brian Boru Young Horse of the Year and the Banner Broodmare of the Year, with incredible prizes on offer.

The Brian Boru holds a prize fund of €5,200 and will be battled out by the top four horses from the following Clarecastle Show competitions; the TIH Championship, ISH Gelding Championship, ISH Filly Championship and RID Championship.

This Banner Broodmare championship is a special, unique competition in which 20 of the best mares in Ireland will compete for a top prize of €2,000, a covering by top Irish Sport Horse Sligo Candy boy and a €300 prize to the breeder of the top mare.

In addition, ten coverings by some of the best sires in Europe will also be on offer.

The show’s fiercely passionate organiser, Michael Slattery, said: “The Clarecastle Show has identified a niche in the market and we have focused all our resources on making our show of benefit to the breeders of Ireland.

“This is all about the Irish breed of horse and it’s all about the breeder. With the Brian Boru in particular we will have the best four horses from the individual championships.

“That obviously means 16 horses will battle it out for the Brian Boru trophy and we will find out who the best horse is.

“With the generous support of Horse Sport Ireland the Clarecastle Show is providing, to the breeders of Ireland, what they want – money!

It’s all well and good getting a red rosette but the prizes on offer here is fantastic and they go straight back to the breeder.

“The theory is simple. If you improve the breed, you improve the quality of the horse and the horses jump higher. And that way people come to your shores to buy your horses.”
